The Autonomic Internet

IST-AUTOI - The Autonomic Internet

What is the Autonomic Internet?

When the Internet was created, it was designed to be a simple-networking system between computers around the world. Some web developers have recently begun to question this original premise. With this in mind, the autonomic Internet project began.

What is it?

At its simplest level, an autonomic network is intended to extend how the world uses the web beyond just legacy Internet technology. By changing the architecture behind the web, users can begin to organize technology into a more dynamic and flexible fund. To create this, research institutes and colleges in North America got together to begin contemplating solutions. At the end of the project, the research organizations plan on having a fully autonomous group of network nodes that span every network.

This dynamic adaptation is intended to meet the various societal and economical needs of Internet users. The autonomic Internet is focused primarily on how the Internet serves the user.

The Integrated Project

Known by some as the Integrated Project, autonomic networking is supposed to make the Internet scaled in a way so that it can extend horizontally and vertically. The project began on January 1, 2006 and is funded by the European Union. Under the program head of Information Societies Technology—Future Emerging Technologies, the project is supposed to take four years to develop a model that demonstrates the possibilities of the new networking system. Under the leadership of ETH Zurich Communications Systems Group, this project is just beginning to reach fruition.

Overall, the autonomic network architecture project has two main adjectives. It seeks to enhance the functionality of networks while also showing that the new technology can work in practice. With this in mind, the project has worked to create a network that repairs, monitors, manages, optimizes and protects itself. By making these concepts inherent in the framework, the project seeks to make an Internet that modifies on its own and constantly re-organizes itself to benefit the needs of the user.

The autonomic internet project is also bent on putting these new ideas in practice. Theoretically, the concept is sound. Users will only be able to benefit if the ideas are put into practice. In order to show this, the project must show that the architecture works in real situations and can learn from mistakes.

The Beginning of the Idea

Originally, the idea for autonomic networking began at IBM. The capabilities of current networks will ultimately limit the size of any potential Internet network. To manage the rapidly growing web, IBM proposed the creation of self-managing networks. Presently, existing networks must find ways to deal with an increasing number of game consoles, smartphones and PDAs that are connected to the Internet in addition to websites. Each additional device adds more features to the web, but also stretches the abilities of existing infrastructures.

IBM started the idea of the autonomic Internet as a way to manage the increasing size and complexity of the web. Like the autonomic nervous system in the human body, autonomic networking is intended to run the Internet without human intervention.
